So, What Exactly is Ductless AC?
Ductless mini-split and multi-split systems keep your home comfortable using an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air handlers mounted to the ceiling or wall. The indoor and outdoor components are connected using only a small hole in the wall. Conditioned air comes directly from the indoor air handlers, which you can place throughout the home in the areas where you want them most.
Since there are no ducts in this type of system, you don’t have to deal with the air loss that plagues conventional air conditioners. Ducts can lose up to 30% of your conditioned air through leaks, while ductless systems are far less likely to develop leaks.
The Benefits of Ductless Heating and Cooling
Upgrading to a ductless heat pump does present a considerable upfront investment, but this type of system can pay you back the difference over time in money-saving benefits and comfort-added rewards. You’ll enjoy:
- Zoned comfort: Adjust the temperature setting individually at each interior unit and turn these on or off independent of one another, so you don’t pay to cool spaces that aren’t in use.
- Lower utility costs: Since there’s no air loss with a ductless AC system, it typically uses less energy and helps lower cooling expenses throughout the year.
- Easier installation: Adding ducts to a historic home, home addition, or newly-finished space like an attic or basement is a big construction job that comes with a major expense. This isn’t required for a ductless system.
